It may seem harsh to say it but remember that you can’t always believe everything you see.  You may think you’ve met your perfect match online and then when you meet up the chemistry just isn’t there, or you find out that the person you were talking to online just isn’t quite how they portrayed themselves.  This is one of the big disadvantages of online dating – other people can lie or exaggerate the truth about themselves.  However, to counteract this, one of the big advantages is the ease of getting to know someone online from the comfort and convenience of home, and having the chance to really get to know more about someone before you take that step in the dating world.


A few tips to get you started are:

• Keep yourself safe – this is the most important thing you can do!  Keep your own details secure and don’t be too keen to offer all your personal details to a new potential date.  Don’t let on too much about your workplace, and don’t give out your home address or phone numbers.

• Be ready for disappointment – sorry to say this, but you probably won’t meet your perfect date on the first day you log in to your account.  If you do, then congratulations, that’s great, but remember that just like in the real world, someone can seem great when you first meet them but on getting to know them you realise that there could never be more than friendship between you.

• Don’t Lie – please don’t be tempted to lie about yourself.  You won’t be doing yourself any favours in the long run and anyone you do meet will soon realise you’ve lied about something and then they won’t know if they can trust anything else you say and trust is very important to maintain a relationship.
